Gluck takes the limelight with two ballets, Les Amours d’Alexandre et de Roxane, and Don Juan. The legend of Don Juan, a man who defies social, moral and religious rules only to be condemned to hell in punishment for his sins, has fascinated innumerable artists and provided them with untold inspiration. After authors Molière, Corneille and Goldoni, Gluck was the first composer to set the story to music, twenty-six years ahead of Mozart’s opera. Gluck’s Don Juan is the first ballet d’action (a ballet where plot and theme take precedence over choreography and sets), making it the forerunner of the major ballets of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
